Hmm.

Mars, the Bringer of War.

First impressions:
Very militaristic and harsh. Not really dissonant, though. Very string-y. Great song.

Given more thought:
Can't figure out the time. Can't get it to fit 4 without changing it slightly. Or 6. Odd. Will give more thought later. Very cool. I think there's a Jet Force Jemini level that uses this. Very similar anyway. Ichor? (Note after playing Ichor lever: Not Ichor. WIll try... S.S. Anubis, then Spawnship. Will find BGM!) Having trouble listening to the melody, 'cause the background part is just so cool.

Given more thought (will coherent-ise all of this in next section.)
It's in 5. Not used very often, which is why it was hard to figure out. Very, very violent song. Can almost see the death. Unlike some others, this song fits it's set theme (war) very well, IMO.

Somewhat more coherent:
Mars, the Bringer of War is, IMO, the best movement of "The Planets". It fits it's set theme (war) very well. Some of the others (Uranus, for example) don't seem to fit as well. There's a definite pulse to the song. I don't think the baground pattern ever stops. It may for a bit, but I think I'd notice (like when the engine of a ship you've been on for days stops suddenly). The song is in 5, and the background pulse goes as such: [triplet] 2 3 4 & 5. After the very beginning, its staccatto and biting. The main parts are less so, but certainly not flowing. Oh. The pulse does end, replaced by on beat notes. The song might go to 4 there. Hard to tell. Quite syncopated. The song itself is very reminiscent of major fighting. It's not pretty, but that doesn't mean it's witout attraction. (Think rubberneckers at car crashes, except the song isn't so fatal. It's a song.) IT's like a march on stroids in some ways. IT's even got the extra "muscle" it doesn't need (except it does...) with it being in 5 rather than 4. Or the main pulse being in a 5 beat cycle. The song may be in four. Who knows. (Yes, I know a ton of people have seen the score, so let me rephrase: "Who, who hasn't seen the score, knows?)

On a scale of 10: 9.9, because there are some places that sorta drag. Given that I'm listening to to a .mid, and can't remember those parts with the orchestra. They may hold when performed by an orchestra. It probably did, since I didn't think they dragged until I listened to the .mid.

Jupiter is next, when I get to it.
