Whee! Yessirday, I auditioned for The Wisard of Oz at Harlequins, a local theater... place... thingy that puts on a younger-person's show every sprummer. Ithink I did well. I was even complimented on my reading by someone I've never seen before in my life. (That's a good thing. They have no reason to lie to make me feel better.) I'm not exactly sure who's directing. The auditions were run by four people, two of whom I know aren't directing (Or at least, they won't be credited as director in hte programs and such). One is the choreographer, who reminds me of... someone relatively famous. I can't remember her name, 'cause I'm not sure if I ever knew it, and whatever I saw her in, I saw a while ago. The guy doing the music highly resembled Tobey Maguire, but not enough to really be any more than not ugly. (Sorta harsh, but true. I mean, I've only been around him for, like, two hours, so...) There were two others, and I think the girl (? Their still at the age where "girl" seems too young to describe them, but "lady" or "woman" seem too old) is the director. Thus, I'm not exactly sure why nosebleed guy (I'll explain) was there.
So, the auditions were relatively simple. We were split into groups, and went between sections before doing onstage readings. The choreographer person had us do something simple to see how we move (There isn't much dancing in the show. I hope I get in the Jitterbug, though. It's the coolest song in the show. I think. I've only seen the music, and the accurateness of notes in my head without ever hearing the music is only so-so. But the rythms are very heavy on the syncopation and jazziness, so... I wish they hadn't cut it from the movie. The scene is cool, two. I mean "If you've got this far, you're lost.", the Tim Man's "no such thing as spooks" **Scream** bit is cool... But this is a sorta long parenthetical thing, so), and then we went and read.
Maybe-Ddirector and Hot Pointless Guy are running the reading. As I notice HPG's... well... hotness, he's seeing all of us for the first time. He, as far as I could tell, was looking at me last. Then... nosebleed. ^____^ (However, I think he may be taken by Music Tobey. Maybe. Just 'cause they're heavily involved in theater, HPG seems British, and MT is sorta (emphasis on the sorta, mind you) lispy & knew tons of crap about music and singing and all that doesn't mean a thing. **Tries to convince self of that**) The nosebleed is quite... severe, and it lasts almost the whole time we were reading scenes, meaning he wasn't around much. He sorta tried to hear, but he had to be near paper towlels and such. There were some really good actors/singers/etc. in my group. But there was one girl who had some (a lot of) trouble emoting. She could read what was on the page, but it was just words. So that's over, and we sit around a little while while the people upstairs sining finish.
We go up there, and MT is sitting at a keyboard. We all go in, pick up music books, and sit down. (I got the chiar. Most everyone else got the couch, but Unemoter Girl had to sit on the floor, and 'LilNoah (One of the few.. erm only... people whose name I got while there. I added the 'Lil, 'cause, well, he'syoung. At least, for the group I was with. There are younger kids there, but they haven't picked up on emoting or projecting, as far as I saw. HEnce, he, being young, but able to act, is 'LilNoah.) was on the arm of the couch/leaning against a file cabinet/on the floor. We did a simple warmup, figured out our ranges, for those of us not in choir/who hadn't been told their range by the new choir director running the musical for her first time ever (and can't play piano). Then, he had us sing part of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (without emoting or trying to be Dorothy) , to hear how we sounded. 'Kinda questionable choice, if you ask me, but I always look too deep at these kind of things, so... Besides, the part he had us sing has an ocatve jump, & some pretty deep stuff, as well mostly easy range stuff, so it does teas one's vocal capabilities somewhat. While others were singing, I was looking through the book (hence my finding the Jitterbug and the coolness of it). I sang, and did well, especially for me. I think. I've never actually sung that particular song, intending to sing well, so.. And I didn't have to drop the way low note, didn't screw up on the jump, and "did a good job of not trying to be Dorothy." ~_^
Then we went down, waited for them to finish with the young'un's stage readings, and started with us up there. I had fun, especially with the Jitterbug lead-in/Haunted Forest scene/whatever you want to call it. Its quite funny, and I had very different (I think) characters for the Cowardly Lion (Gee, who didn'y expect they'd have me read for that...), Tin Man, and Scarecrow. And every time we read it, the group I was up there with had no problem with synchronizing "I'd turn back if I were you." without saying anything or gesturing. We probably never had the best possible group up there all at once, but there were plenty of good dorothy's, a perfect Scarecrow(-ette), I think. she may have overdone it a tad, but that's easily fixed, a couple good Lions, and the Tin Man was never really good or bad, 'cause everyone pretty much did it the same. (So it was good or bad, but it was all equal.)
I wasn't called back, but I sorta wish I had been, just so I could've done more. The people there last night were all cool, and I want to get to know all the people who were running the auditions better. I'm sure I have a part, and I hope it's in the (as I call them) "Big Four", though one of them is obviously not a choice. (The "Big Four being Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion.) (And no, I don't plan on ever calling them the "Big Four" again. Don't ask me why I did.)
So... Yeah.
